Note:
1. Dayang Laing was created by God Almighty from a big piece of gold called “Tengkulas Batu Mas” which he placed at the eastern corner of the world surrounded by desert. Her first husband was Bunsu Ribut (the Wind God) and begot the Seven Sisters (Bintang Banyak or Pleidaes). Her second husband was Abu Tinggang the son of Petara Semarugah (god who have authority on all land).
Ci.2 Jelenggai was a Sumatran ancestor. He was a sailor and an adventurer. He married the youngest of the Seven Sisters (Bunsu Bintang Banyak) – the daughter of Dayang Laing and Bunsu Ribut – and begot Selamuda. He taught the Iban on how to use the movement of Pleidaes to determine their padi planting season.
Ci.3 Selamuda married Dayang Manis Muka, the daughter of the Boar Chief of the animal Spirit world. They begot Begeri who learned how to use pig liver to discern the future fate of human being during festivals, such as mudas, when farmers seek indication regarding omen heard during the clearing season of the year. His descendant is still using this tradition nowadays.
Ci.7.1 Patinggi Gurang was a Sumatran ancestor who came from Sumatra and landed at Kayong in Kalimantan Barat where he finally settled.
Ci.8.1 Patinggi Ngadan was one of first pioneers who came from Kayong to settle in the middle Layar river in the Saribas District where he died and was buried at Lupa Cemetry near Dabok, Layar.
Ci.11.1 Saang was a chief who migrated from Layar to settle in the Lower Paku. Due to his arrival, the lower Paku and Upper Paku were made into two administrative region long before the arrival of the Rajah Brooke. When he died, he was succeeded as chief of Lower Paku and Anyut region by his son-in-law Uyut “Bedilang Besi” the husband of his eldest daughter Nangku.
Ci.12.12 Malang “Pengarah” married Lika (a daughter of Saang and younger sister of Nangku) was driven away from Ulu Anyut by his brother-in-law, Uyut “Bedilang Besi” and other relatives. As a result, Malang and his family settled at Serudit Stream in the Lower Paku. His descendant were the famous warrior under Chief Linggir “Mali Lebu” and war leader Chulo “Tarang” who later migrated to Krian Region in the Kalaka Dustrict. The reason for the expulsion was unknown.
Ci.16.122 Penghulu Saang “Rumpang” was also a Nakhoda who led his followers, together with Budin “Gerasi” and his followers, bought valuable jars in Sabah.
Ci.13.212 Mawar Biak “Ragai Ngerang” was a war leader who lived at Ulu Entanak near the town of Betong in the Saribas District. He died in the enemy’s country while leading his fighters in war.
Ci.14.212 Chandu (f) was a daughter of Selangka and Bau of Seremat in the Batang Ai, near Lubok Antu. Her father Selengka was a mighty war leader of the Batang Ai of his time. Chandu was the sister of Sentu, Mawan, Pagan, Niok (f) and Buja of Enteli in Batang Ai. Her hierloom “Tajau” is still kept by the family of late Benedict Sandin @ Kerangan Pinggai, Paku, Spaoh, Saribas.
Ci.17.2122 Chief Unggang “Lebor Menoa” was the invader of the old Malay Village at Muara Tebas where he and his warriors killed many enemies. He also guarded the South China Sea coast from the mouth of Saribas River westward as far as Santubong Delta from frequent invasions of the Illanun and Sulok Pirates before the arrival of James Brooke to Sarawak. His sons Luta, Mulok & Ketit perished while sailing in search of Tuchong (Hugh Shell valued by people in ancient days for making armlets) to the Beliton Island. He was also the originator of the modern day dowry of the Saribas Iban wedding custom. His grandson Bunyau was the father of Panglima Bakir and the brother of Maoh who were the first Saribas Iban Chief to colloborate with the Government of James Brooke in building a fort at Betong in 1858. This unwelcomed action angered Ajie, Nanang & Luyoh (sons of OKP Dana “Bayang” of Padeh) and resulted in hatred among them and this led to the later’s attack on the Fort and Ajie’s death at Sungai Langit. This quarell continued until after Nanang & Luyoh’s surrender at Sadok Mountain in 1861 after the Third Sadok Expedition.
Ci.19.21222 Pengarah Ringkai was made the first Iban Pengarah under Brooke Rule at Fort Alice in Simanggang in 1886. He suceeded Penglima Bakir who died in 1874. All his brothers were loyal fighters of the Brooke. He died in 1902 and was succeeded by his brother, Penghulu Biju who retires in 1922. Penghulu Biju died of old age in 1927. He was suceeded by his nephew cum son-in-law, Penghulu Empati in 1922. Chulo (son of Penghulu Empati) was a longhouse headman in sucession of his uncle Manggat (son of Tangkun “Resa”) at Bangai Kanan near Betong. Pancres Eddie was a Sarawak Administrative Officer (SAO) at the end of the Brooke Rule in 1941 at Lubok Antu. After 2nd World War, he was attached to the Sarawak Co-operative Dept. and then to Radio Malaysia Sarawak as Head of Iban Section, and from thence he became the Resident of the 7th Division of Sarawak till his retirement in 1973.

Pemajai tusut = 20 x 25 = 500 years

Pemanjai tusun ari = 27 peturun x 25 taun = 675 years.
The tusut from Abu Tingang appears too long. This is not logic because if Pateh Gurang and Patinggi Gurang lived in Borneo within the same period. Is this observation right?
These whole tusut compilation are just data to show that the Ibans have developed their culture and oral history like any other advance culture in the world. They all started as a myth and through the ages, it shaped our spirit and later our society. It’s not a mathematical depository to prove the exactness or correctness of any oral tradition. The important thing that comes out of these data is the human spirit that comes out that shaped our society. To find out a truly scientifically verified date on Iban oral history, you’ll have to do a scientific research personally as the data here do not cater for that mathematically correct answers that you are looking for. I have also noted the various logical gap in all the articles that I have published here and still have many answers to seek. That is why I mentioned that I always remind scholars and readers that my articles is not an absolute and authoritative article for the study of Iban cultural history and tradition.
Ok, Abu Tingang anak Petara Semarugah as below.
It seems that the story Jelenggai and Selamuda (before upto Patinggi Gurang) happened in Sumatra, not in Kalimantan Barat..

The story of Jelenggai marrying Bunsu Bintang Banyak from Early Iban migration Part 1:
Jelenggai thus agreed and a marriage ceremony was held. Afterwards, the sisters told him that his wife’s name was Bunsu Bintang Banyak, the youngest of the Pleiades.
Three years after he had married Bunsu Bintang Banyak, the latter bore Jelenggai a son, whom they named Selamuda. As he was the only child of the family, they were all very fond of him. They arranged that he be looked after by his father during the day, while the rest of the family went out to work in their padi field. From that day onward the father looked after his son during the absence of the other members of the family. Each day the child’s mother warned Jelenggai not to open the lid of their only jar, called tajau pengajih.
Jelenggai obeyed her. He never attempted to open the jar’s lid. But after her repeated warnings, he became curious. He thought that there must be something inside the jar to cause his wife to forbid him to open it.
One day while he and his son were alone in the house, he opened the lid of the jar. It was then the season in which farmers plant their padi. When he opened the lid, he saw through the mouth of the jar that there were thousands of men on the earth below planting their rice. Upon seeing this, he realized that he was in heaven, for all the men he saw appeared far below him. Unfortunately after this he became very worried. He kept on thinking of his own people on the earth below. Through worry, his face turned pale. As usual, late in the evening, his wife and sisters-in-law came home. When the meal was ready they invited Jelenggai and his son to eat together with them. Both Jelenggai and his son took very little food and Jelenggai looked sad and worried. Upon seeing them in this state, Bunsu Bintang Banyak asked Jelenggai whether he had opened the lid of the forbidden jar. He replied that he had, because he was anxious to see what was inside which she had forbidden him to see.
Hearing this Bunsu Bintang Banyak wept sorrowfully. “Because of what you have done, Jelenggai”, she said, “You and our son will no longer be able to live with us”. She held her son and wept loudly as if she mourned the dead. “I never thought that we would be separated from each other; the more I think of it the more sorrowful I shall be when I am separated from you, my dearest child.” She wept inconsolably.
The next day all the sisters wept. They eventually lowered Jelenggai and his son down from heaven to the earth below. Immediately, before they lowered them, Bunsu Bintang Banyak said, “Jelenggai, we are the seven stars who must be heeded by farmers on earth. If you see us sitting at the centre of the sky, you must at once start to plant your padi. If we have passed the centre of the sky when you plant your padi, your farm will be useless. Since the first day you came to stay with us, you have seen that, not for one day, have we remained at home without work to do. This is because we must move according to the season, so that men below may look to us for guidance in their farming.”
Bunsu Bintang Banyak commanded Jelenggai to remember her advice, and to tell thek son Selamuda that the location of the Pleiades should forever be an example to the sons of men as they farm on earth.
After Jelenggai and his son had returned to earth, all marveled at them, for they knew not who they were. Jelenggai related to them the story of how he had started his adventure beginning with the time he had sailed in search of the “Pauh Laba” fruit, to the time when he came to the sky and married the youngest of the Pleiades.
They believed him and from that time onwards all Dayak farmers have commenced planting padi when the Pleiades are sitting in the middle of the sky, following Bunsu Bintang Banyak’s advice to Jelenggai.
Eventually, after the death of Jelenggai, Selamuda, his son, married the daughter of Bunsu Landak. Through this marriage, Selamuda left his father’s house to live with his wife and her parents.
In the year that followed his marriage, Selamuda’s father-in-law’s farm was constantly despoiled by troops of wild boars. In the end, Selamuda and his wife were compelled by his wife’s parents to guard the farm day and night. Even so, the wild boars took no notice of their shouts or the things they beat upon to frighten them away. Even while they ate their meals at night, the boars came to feed upon the crops around them.
One night Selamuda speared the boars with sharp bamboo spears. He killed a few, but even this did not frighten the others. Though he did this night after night, still more wild boars came. One day he decided to fetch his father-in-law’s only iron spear. He did not tell him, for he knew if he told him, his father-in-law would surely have stopped him.
Selamuda and his wife ate their food early that night, for they had heard the grunts of pigs coming towards their farm from the nearby woods. Having finished, Selamuda went outside the hut to wait for the boars with the spear in his hand. A very large boar, leading his followers, came out of the forest and entered the farm. Selamuda stood quietly behind a tree stump. As the pig leader approached to pass him, he struck it with his spear. The pig immediately fled with Selamuda’s spear stuck into his body. Selamuda followed the wounded boar. After a time he could no longer see the trail of blood as the night grew very dark. At last he gave up following the pig. The rest of the night he slept in the woods, and early the next morning he followed the trail again until he came to the junction of seven main ways.
He was puzzled. He did not know which path he should take. After a while, he heard the sound of voices coming towards him. When they reached him, Selamuda asked the travelers their destination. They told him that they were seven wizards who had been invited by the Bunsu Babi to cure his father who was very sick. As he followed them, the trail of blood could still be seen along the path. When they came to a house the seven wizards warned him not to go with them into the house. So he waited outside.
After sometime, a person came from the house and asked Selamuda whether be had any knowledge of curing. Selamuda replied that he would try, “for in the past”, he said, “I was invited several times to cure sick persons”.
Upon hearing his words, the man invited Selamuda to enter the house at once, in order that he might do something for the sick man.
On his arrival, the sick man declared that if any of the medicine men could cure him, he would allow the man to marry any one of his seven daughters. The seven medicine men then started to perform their pelian over the sick man. But their incantations brought no improvement; instead the sick man cried louder and louder from his pain.
Finally, Selamuda came into the room from the communal gallery outside. He saw at once that all in the room were pigs. He also saw a spear, invisible to the pigs, stuck into the sick man’s chest. Its shaft was brushed from time to time by the wizards, causing the wounded boar to scream loudly.
Upon seeing this, Selamuda knew that the spear was his. He reasoned that the wounded boar must be the one he had speared when it led its followers to despoil his father-in-law’s farm. He also realized that these were the boars who frequented the farms of men in human world.
Before he pulled the spear out of the boar’s wound, he asked that entemut (turmeric) be pounded into pulp. When this was done, he pulled the spear out of the boar’s chest, and at the same time applied the entemut pulp to the wound. When he pulled the spear out of the wound, the boar screamed, “adoh mak”, as it was very painful indeed.
After this he advised the boar to rest. In the morning when he came into the room, the boar smiled and told him that he was very much better. Selamuda was pleased when he heard this and again advised him to rest further until he was fully recovered.
After his recovery, the boar asked Selamuda to choose for his wife one of his seven daughters. He chose the youngest, named Dayang Manis Muka.
Some years after their marriage, Dayang Manis Muka bore a son whom she and Selamuda named Begeri. While Begeri was still a child, his grandfather held a great feast. He invited all the beasts, birds and creeping things. After they had drank so much wine that everyone was drunk, the python who was the longest of the serpents vomited. His vomit was licked up by other serpents which made them poisonous. The poor ular bunga, who came later, was left nothing to lick up, which left it non-poisonous to this day. In this way, too, the python lost its venom.
During the feast, the flying fox (semawa’), also vomited. In his vomit all sorts of seeds could be seen. Upon seeing these, the animals realized that the fruit trees in the world were bearing fruit. After the feast was over, the boars announced that now they must go in search of fruit. They agreed to invite an old lady named Ini’ Manang to be their guide. They walked for days and nights. During the day they used their ordinary eyes, but at night they changed to their night eyes. In this way they walked throughout the forests. As they roamed they finally came to a place called Tanjong Munong. At this place they all changed their mouths in order to wear munong, or bristles. From here they roamed again until they reached a place called Tunjing. At Tunjing they all donned hooves.
Leaving Tunjing they came to a place where they found abundant durian fruit. As they ate, Ini Manang was struck by the buloh menangkin, a trap set by men to spear boars. She died in due course, and after her death all the pigs, except for Dayang Manis Muka, fled away.
Selamuda and his son Begeri now wished to return to this world. Before she fled Dayang Manis Muka told Selamuda that she and her family and all the rest of the people in her house were pigs. She explained that she could no longer live with him, but must go home to her father’s house. She advised Selamuda that in the future whenever men wish to see their fate, either during sickness or in hopes of obtaining riches, they should kill a pig in order to divine with its liver. She also advised him to see that their son Begeri was brought up to be a good man and to remember the tradition of liver divination.
After she had finished her advice, she left them to follow the rest of the pigs who fled home before her
FIRST 5 GENERATIONS BORN IN SUMATRA. Where in Sumatra? Is it Panai where Pengulu Minggat died and buried?
1. Dayang Laing x Bunsu Ribut = Bunsu Bintang Banyak
2. Bunsu Bintang Banyak x Jelenggai = Selamuda
3. Selamuda x Dayang Manis Muka = Begeri
4. Begeri x Senia = Busok “Tandok Raja”
5. Busok “Tandok Raja” x Singgau = Mai “Apai Rekaya”, Sendie (f)
6.1 Mai “Apai Rekaya” x Jelawai = Patinggi Gurang (LANDED AT KAYONG FROM SUMATRA)
7.1 Patinggi Gurang x Pudai = Patinggi Ngadan (SETTLED AT lAYAR FROM KAYONG)
8.1 Patinggi Ngadan x Lamentan = Bata (f), Lubun
Ci.7.1 Patinggi Gurang was a Sumatran ancestor who came from Sumatra and landed at Kayong in Kalimantan Barat where he finally settled.
Ci.8.1 Patinggi Ngadan was one of first pioneers who came from Kayong to settle in the middle Layar river in the Saribas District where he died and was buried at Lupa Cemetry near Dabok, Layar.
Generations 1 to 15 (before Pateh Ambau) happened in Sumatra, right?
1. Dayang Laing x Abu Tinggang = Saliman
2. Saliman begot Semarugan
3. Semarugan begot Sera Gindi
4. Sera Gindi begot Sema Ugang
5. Sema Ugang begot Sera Gindam
6. Sera Gindam begot Sera Gindit
7. Sera Gindit begot Sera Gindah
8. Sera Gindah begot Merom Panggai
9. Merom Panggai begot Abang Musa
10. Abang Musa begot Pateh Simpong
11. Pateh Simpong begot Pateh Rejab
12. Pateh Rejab begot Pateh Rendah
13. Pateh Rendah begot Pateh Rasiek
14. Pateh Rasiek begot Pateh Ayu
15. Pateh Ayu begot Pateh Gurang & Dayang Patri
16. Pateh Gurang begot Pateh Sayat
17. Pateh Sayat begot Pateh Ismail
18. Pateh Ismail begot Pateh Sulaiman
19. Pateh Ismail begot Pateh Menaul
20. Pateh Menaul begot Pateh Menegir
21. Pateh Menegir begot Pateh Teliang
22. Pateh Teliang x Dayang Simba = Radin Tanjong
23. Radin Tanjong x Dayang Lungah = Pateh Ambau (found inside an egg inside a bamboo plant)
24. Pateh Ambau x Remias (Blangkat’s daughter) = Pateh Irie, Babang, Liang, Tubang, Ganggong
Sorry, generations 1 to 22 (before Pateh Ambau) happened in Sumatra, right? This assumes that Pateh Gurang is not the same person as Patinggi Gurang.
Is it possible that Patinggi Gurang and Pateh Gurang the same person with 2 different tittles?
7.1 Patinggi Gurang x Pudai = Patinggi Ngadan (SETTLED AT LAYAR FROM KAYONG)
Ci.7.1 Patinggi Gurang was a Sumatran ancestor who came from Sumatra and landed at Kayong in Kalimantan Barat where he finally settled.
16. Pateh Gurang begot Pateh Sayat
Patinggi Gurang and Pateh Gurang are of different generations.
Looking at the number of generations from Dyg Laing married to Bunsu Ribut and Abu Tingang, respectively:
Bunsu ribut = 1 to 8 until Patinggi Ngadan settled at Layar = 6 x 25 =150 years
Abu Tingang = 1 to 24 until Pateh Ambau settled at Lubok Antu = 24 x 25 =600 years
it can be cancluded that Dyg Laing cannot have lived so long as in the second tusut with Abu Tingang or perhaps the first tusut with Bunsu Ribut is not recounted properly ie missing some generations, unless Patinggi Ngadan lived much earlier before Pateh Ambau = 600 -150 = 450 years which is not believable because they both (Patinggi Ngadan and Pateh Ambau) lived in Sarawak more or less within the same period.
Dyg Laing referred to tusut with her 2 husbands (the first Bunsu Ribut and second Abu Tinggang) is the same person, right?
Tusut from Abu Tinggang (middle east) and Bunsu Ribut are from different source and different mythical era. In term of logical genealogical analysis, a genealogy from Bunsu Ribut (1st marriage) should be longer than genealogy from Abu Tinggang (2nd marriage). Clearly, the Minangkabau have longer written record from the Iban oral record and thus explain the huge differences.I believe the early geneoligist were trying to link up the two myth to establish and substantiate the source of the genealogy.
Realistically you cannot expect tusut to be recounted properly, especially if it is an oral literature and based on mythical recount. The important thing in the study of culture, which is widely acceptable in social history is that, myths are a guide to culture from which we see how nature and human spirit shape a society. All renown world culture developed based on myth, of which some wre scientifically proven through archeological work and scientific research. What do you expect, when not much such research is done on Iban culture. It’s just like putting an argument, Did God create man? Is God a myth? Why do people accept the myth that God is the creator?
You cannot conclude anything with myth. You can only analyse how Iban culture and society is shaped or evolves with outside influences from our Sumatran, Minangkabau, Javanese ancestors. It’s not the mathematics of Tusut that is important. It’s the source of our Iban history that needs to be analysed. Even the oldest book of Bible timeline history is not mathematically correct, even though it was written more than 4000 years ago.

It is said that Jelenggai and Patinggi were Sumatran ancestors so that implies they were born in Sumatra, won’t they?
Qoute:
Ci.2 Jelenggai was a Sumatran ancestor. He was a sailor and an adventurer. He married the youngest of the Seven Sisters (Bunsu Bintang Banyak) – the daughter of Dayang Laing and Bunsu Ribut – and begot Selamuda. He taught the Iban on how to use the movement of Pleidaes to determine their padi planting season.
Ci.7.1 Patinggi Gurang was a Sumatran ancestor who came from Sumatra and landed at Kayong in Kalimantan Barat where he finally settled.
Jelenggai was our Sumatran ancestor. There is no mention that he was an Iban or of other races or tribe.
Can someone tell the origin of the pig liver divination tradition?
Salamuda (son of Jelenggai) was our link to our Sumatran ancestor and our claim to be the descendent of Bunsu Bintang Banyak who taught and guide the Ibans in their padi farming cycle, which is also the practice used by the Minangkabau farmers.
Pig liver divination was taught by Dayang Manis Muka (boar princess) to his son Begeri.
