Telichu tu bebali nyadi antu gerasi leboh ke ngasu enggau menyadi iya Telichai. Sabedau iya bebali nyadi antu gerasi, iya ngajar anak menyadi iya, Manang Jarai, nunu kulit kayu lukai dikena muru antu gerasi leboh malam bulan pernama enggau leboh ari kudi, beguntur, bekilat serta ujan lebat.
Ragam tu indu kitai Iban ketarubah iya nemu ngena enselup ngerendam benang awak ka bechura mirah dikena nenun kain. Ragam beranak ka Manang Jarai.
Telichai bebini ngambi Endu Dara Sia Bunsu Kamba, ke berumah dilempa maram samadang, ke ngembuan tajau rusa ke bebuah bukir ngena neladan bingka buah senggang ke lalu nurun ka asal tajau. Seduai iya beranak ka :
- Gila Gundi (Si Gundi) – Apai Keling, Orang Panggau Libau
- Retak Daai – Apai Sarapoh
- Lalak Pala – Apai Bujang Sakunding Mupong
- Brenai Sugi – Apai Kumpai Brenai Rarat Beranatong
- Kurong Mayang
- Bui Nasi
- Belangkat – Apai Remias (bini Pateh Ambau).
Nyadi Si Gundi tu bejulok “Sepit Api Ke Bejari Ragang-Ragang, Pengetis Ka Simbong Terabang, Ke Bejalai Melit Tisau Langit Besabong Gelang”’. Dalam leka main bukai, iya mega disebut orang baka tu; ‘”Bujang Kelemayang Panas, Tandok Kijang Berindas, Gemuring Gading Taing-Taing Bepelimping Pala Patong, Chang Chelawang, Gila Gundi Sepit Api ke Bejari Ragang-Ragang, Bujang Sampang (or Sampak) Gading Tandok Kijang Kuning”’. Iya tu anak tuai ka sida tujoh iko diri menyadi.
Si Gundi bebini nguai ka indu orang Panggau Libau ke benama Laing “Dayang Be-mas, Beredai enggai tuai, Bereda berambau dara, Lemba limbong bulan begantung, Lemba lembi bulan pegari” lalu beranak ka:
- Keling “Manok Biring Sempidan Arang, Keling Ajee Ke Berani Tau Serang” tauka “Keling Aji, pemaioh bini banyak rambang; Kiai Anyai, penyambut sakai pemanggai lintang; Keling Aji berani ati, tau serang; Gerasi nading, bujang berani kempang”,
- Endu Rikok Papan Pelangka (tauka “Kelinding Tambak Aping, Endu Suloh Bintang Betating, Endu Rikok Papan Berengong, Endu Rioh Bunsu Keling”).
- Endu Sipantang Mayang Mara.
Si Gundi ke bebini indu orang Panggau benama Laing lalu nguai nampil orang Panggau-Gellong ninggal ka menyadi iya ke bukai. Iya lalu idup begulai enggau kaban ipar iya ke endang asal orang Panggau enggau Gellong. Laban iya ka endang mutus berani serta lurus ati enggau kaban mentua iya, dia iya nyau mansang dikerindu ka bala ipar iya ke bukai baka sida Ensing Gima, Si Ganti seduai Beddang. Ari sukong sida Ipar iya tu tadi, iya pan lalu didirika sida nyadi tuai orang Panggau. Kategal nya, Ipar iya ke benama Apai Sabit Bekait seduai Apai Ribai lalu enda lantang ati ngagai Si Gundi laban seduai iya endang tiris pantis orang Panggau serta patut nyadi tuai orang Panggau Libau. Barengkah ari nya tadi, sida lalu belaya diri sabilik ti ngujong ka Apai Sabit Bekait nyerang rumah sida Si Gundi. Leboh serang tu, Si Gundi seduai Ensing Gima sama parai ngetan ka rumah diri. Sida bukai lalu ditangkap Apai Sabit Bekait magang lalu dibai iya lari ka langit takut ka Keling seduai Laja datai malas pemarai apai seduai. Sida Keling, Laja, Bungai Nuing enggau Pungga endang udah pegi balelang ngagai menoa bukai maia tu. Apai Ribai mega mai bala iya pindah lari ka tasik besai. Tampil serta peturun Si Gundi enggau orang Panggau-Gellong baka tu:

Iya nguta diri di langit takut ka sida Keling seduai Laja datai malas pemati apai iya. Nya kabuah maioh cherita Iban nusoi sida Keling ngayau ngagai sida Apai Sabit Bekait di langit.
- Apai Ribai tu menyadi biak sida Indai Keling menyadi. Sida pindah ka tasik besai ngagai menoa ke dikumbai Jambai Sentebai, Di tasik besai Ledong Linang. Pendai sida di keresik anik, Anti sugu mekang, Menoa batu intan endor orang ngemeran ka ringgit wang baru. Sida pindah ka tasik besai udah bekau laya Keling seduai anak Ribai ke benama Selanjat Hari kategal barebut deka jadi enggau Kumang. Kumang besemaia jadi enggau sapa-sapa orang ke ulih ngalepas ka apai iya ke benama Beddang ari tangkap sida Apai Sabit Bekait di langit. Keling lalu mai bala iya ngayau ka langit lalu mai Beddang pulai ka Gellong.
Udah parai Si Gundi seduai Ensing Gima di serang sida ipar iya Apai Sabit Bekait, orang Panggau enggau Orang Gellong lalu pindah nitih ka sida Apai Sabit Bekait ka langit. Ari perang tu, nama Keling lalu nyadi pegari berani, tau ngayau, tau mulau, tau serang, tau mandang nyadi tuai orang Panggau Libau nganti apai iya.

Diatu ka sakayu embawang iya agi idup dia ke alai iya merejok bechakap deka malas ka pemarai Bagor apai Bada ke bebini ka Layar lalu dibunoh orang Layar. Ninga apai iya kena bunoh orang Layar, anak iya Bada lalu mai Kajop, Ugap enggau Nilie ngambi pati nyawa apai iya ka Layar.
Nyadi jalai sida ka Layar, sida ngundur ka Batang Ai. Di Nanga Layar sida ngetu ba Beliu Apong ke alai sida bechakap, nyau bepandam ka buah apong ba tangkai. Kenu ko jerita tuai, ngenying baka kaban pipit terbai buah apong dipandam sida. Ari nya baru sida mudik ngagai rumah orang ke digagai sida. Leboh mandi ba pengkalan orang, sida lalu bempa ka buah engkuang. Tembu begari nya baru niki ka rumah.
Malam udah tembu makai sida deka bendar bira. Sida lalu bira di tanju, ngemira ka buah engkuang. Nyadi babi ka makai tai sida ngenying baka kerup. Nya alai orang Layar ngumbai sida bira ka batu, ke ngasoh orang takut ka sida. Orang maioh ngumbai sida gagah tulang antu.
Samalam nya sida berandau ka pati nyawa Bagor. Orang Layar ngumbai nya patut dibri pati nyawa tajau rusa nyengenda ke lalu ditambah ka enggau gerunong, guong bulan selabuan enggau salai semah sabatang ladung. Paginya, serta pati nyawa nya udah keluar sida Bada lalu mulai ka diri ngagai Batang Ai.
Belangkat tu apai Remias ke jadi enggau Pateh Ambau lalu nurun ka Iban Batang Ai enggau Saribas.

Who is the patron of weaving, Ragam or Dara Tinchin Temaga?

Any story how did Ragam discover that enselup tarum can be used for colouring red?
There was no particular story about that discovery. But it certainly not rocket science to note that enselup is a natural coloring material.
Ragam is the originator of cloth weaving and thread making for the early Iban. Dara Tinchin Temaga and the Gelong people (Kumang and Lulong) are the spiritual patron of weaving for the Ibans. They taught us the proper technique and tools used and also the spiritual culture of weaving different types of clothes and designed applied.
Hwo became manang first, Manang Jarai or Menjaya?

Manang Jarai is our Iban first medicine man to cure sick people with physical sickness. Most probably, in his era, he knew about herbal medicine used for various symptoms. The other manang that came after him were mostly spiritual healers and developed the culture of shamanism.
Bila Dua is the place where Ketungau branches into 2 with the original Ketungau continues further to the east to reach upper Undop river while the new branch flows to the right called Merakai river to reach (besabong) with ulu Kumpang, just before Lubok Antu, right?
I’ve never been there. From the map, it appear to be correct that Ulu Ketungau meets Ulu Undup, while Ulu Merakai meets Ulu Kumpang. These two areas were the main migration route to Sarawak.
How is the tusut from Serapoh to Jelian?

Bunsu remaong lives among spiritual world, in Panggau and Gelong, is it?
After all the tigers had been killed, except for the one who was pregnant, the man whose daughter had been killed by the tigers, returned home. The pregnant tiger gave birth to the last tiger found in Borneo and had lived a very solitary life. He is known as “Bujang Lembau” (literally meant “Reluctant Bachelor”) or “Bunsu Remaung” and was believed to have lived in the spiritual world amongst the spiritual heroes. He was also known to be a guardian spirit for some past Iban warriors.

After Sera Gunting told Sengalang Burong that he was indeed his grandson, he could not believed his ears, even though he had grown to be very fond of the child. This bond had grown into special affection for the child as the child had kept him accompanied and happy through out their stay. But still he refused to believe Sea Gunting. He said to Sera Gunting, “If you are really my grandson, you will have no trouble with the various trials which I will ask you to perform.”

In which tusut is Sera Gindik and Empangai belong to?

Soon after Jimbun’s return, the chiefs named Sera Gindik and Empangai called for a grand conference to plan for a new migration from Semitau to the Batang Ai region in Sarawak border. All those who attended the conference agreed to the migration plan. The Iban living at Semitau then made preparations to move to the Ketungau region, a true right tributary of the Kapuas. It will be from Ketungau region that they will send scouts to the Batang Ai to survey the suitable land for farming. The scouts returned to inform them that there are plenty of land for farming as well as the abundance of fish in the rivers and plenty of game in the forest.
On hearing these reports, the Iban were very pleased. The wasted no more time at the Ketungau region and migrate quickly to this new country. Before their separations, they agreed not to become disunited to avoid being beaten by other tribes like the Bukitans, Seru, Ukit, Kantu and other tribes they encounter in their migration journey.
From the Kapuas, the Iban ascended the Ketungau River to a place called Bila Dua. Here they intended to settle for a time at Tapang Peraja. As they were about to land their boat at Bila Dua, they heard the call of an omen bird, Bejampong (crested jay), from the right hand bank of the river. On hearing this, a council of chiefs was held and it was declared that they should stay there in temporary huts for seven days to honour the call of the omen bird, Bejampong. Afterwards, a second meeting was held to discuss the implications the Bejampong augury. In this meeting, Chief Sagan-Agan assured them that they should not leave that place until they have stayed there for three farming years.
I’m not sure of their kinship with other Iban Chiefs. Many of the early pioneer leaders did not necessarily belong to the same bloodline.

Sengalang Burong Biak is a Batang Ai version of their tusut. This also include their version of the origin of Pateh Ambau. A Saribas version clearly mentioned that Pateh Ambau was a Minangkabau Trader, while Batang Ai version mentioned Pateh Ambau to be the descendent of Sengalang Burong Biak who was born from an egg inside a bamboo.
Where is the tusut from Bejie for early Iban leaders, Raja Ningkan, Sagan-Agan, Bedali and Jugah?
The Ibans then moved further up the Kayung until they reached a place called Ulu Landak. After settling there for sometimes, some of them migrated up the Melawi River. After settling along the banks of Melawi River for three generations, their leaders, Raja Ningkan, Sagan-Agan, Bedali and Jugah called for a large meeting to discuss further migrations.
Is Sagan-agan from Lalak Pala?

Jenua is apai Asagn-Agan as per the Lalak Pala tusut.
Jimbun is the chief who defeated the crocodile spirit.

It could be the same Rawing. He was a very smart and skillful Chief.
Not all of these leaders were the descendent of Bejie. They might establish kinship trough marriage, but they belong to different Ibanic groups. Sagan-Agan is the only Chief whom I know to be a descendent of Bejie in this group.

The healing of Bunyau:
In the days of Geraman, Sera Gunting’s great-great-great grandson Ambau migrated eastward from the Tiang Laju range and built his longhouse at Pangkalan Tabau, two miles above the present town of Lubok Antu. Ambau was one of the chiefs who had participated in discussions to settle amicably the strife between Kanyong of Rantau Merarang and Semalanjat of Bungkap. For his fairness and bravery in war, his name survives to this day in Dayak songs. At this time there also lived a man named Buyau who suffered from open sores which covered his body. He was shunned by all and was confined to a hut adjoining his family’s open verandah.
Sera Gunting began to lead his followers to migrate to the Batang Lupar territory. He left Merakai and build his commanding longhouse on the spine of Tiang Laju mountain, between the head waters of Undup and Kumpang rivers, a few miles south of present-day Engkelili town. Sera Gunting died here in the ripeness of old age and was succeeded as chief by his son Sera Kempat.
Are these Dayak leaders originated from Bejie?
After the spirit heroes has separated from the humankind, the Dayak people began to re-organize ourselves under the leadership of the following men: Bui Nasi, Putong Kempat, Litan Lengan, Pulang Belawan, Bejit Manai and Retak Dai (father of Sarapoh). Ba pansik aku, asal kitai Iban tu endang udah lama dulu nguan menoa di pulau borneo tu. Amai munyi ko nuan, agi aku biak menya endang selalu berunding ka pengamat tusut kitai Iban. Nyau udah mereti ka agi laban ke selalu ninga sida Aya BS enggau Professor C. Sather berandau, bejurai ka pasal jerita asal kitai Iban, tusut tu endang maioh pengamat laban tusut tu endang dikena kitai Iban ngingat ka “history” aki ini kitai kelia. Nyadi chara bukai dikena kitai ngingat ka “history” kitai kelia nya ngena jalai leka main (sampi, biau, renong, etc). Pia mega tusut tu maioh tuju (e.g. kena melah pinang, kena ngiga kaban enti leboh bejalai, kena bejurai ka sapa tau bempu buah, tanah, tembawai lama, menoa, reta tengkira, etc). Tusut tu mega dikena kitai ngerintai ka pengawa enggau pendiau tuai-tuai kitai Iban kelia. Semua menoa enggau macham2 utai ti dipansa sida iya (landmark) nyadi ka “proof” ka tusoi sida nya endang amat serta betul. Ari nya kitai nemu penatai diri empu enggau semua reta tengkira lama ke dikembuan kitai turun menurun.
Nyadi ba sanentang pengamat tusut tu, iya bepanggai ka pengingat siko-siko orang ke tau betusut. Sida endang nyidi pemindah tauka pejalai orang ke tuai dulu kelia. Tusut penatai Rentap tu nadai aku udah bisi ngiga, tang peturun iya udah digumpul aku nitih ka udah dipublished sida.

Ba senentang tusut Batang Ai enggau Skrang, aku enda tentu nemu, ukai nya tegal penyarut kini, tang nyangka endang betusut kurang dikemeranka sida (minta ampun). Enda ibuh ga orang bukai, Raja Berani baka Rentap ‘Sadok” pan mabu amat tusut ka ditemu, semina ari Ningkan x Imbong = Rentap, nurunka Tambong x Layang, ngiru Subang x Munan (ila aku mantaika tu baru).

Enti nuan study tusut tu ngena spreadsheet, dia nuan meda logical pattern turun kitai Iban. Reti nya, research sida Aya Sandin menya bisi bendar betul (taja sida ngena pengingat aja). Tang bisi ga nya salah tingkah tauka bebalut mimit, esp. ba pun pechah tusut ari bala anak Telichai (Gila Gundi, Retak Dai, etc). Bisi mega tingkah tusut enda sabaka lebih agi antara turun orang Batang Ai enggau Kitai Saribas/Skrang. Nya kebauh nama tauka pangkat kitai Iban bisi mai nama Pateh, Temenggong & Penghulu, etc. Ari Pateh Ambau, tusun pendiau enggau literature kitai bisi nyemaka orang Minangkabau (e.g. Council of elders, Farming Methodology).
Kadiatu, agi maioh “data” pasal kitai Iban deka compile aku ditu laban sayau ka semua penemu lama lenyau ngapa. Enti bisi enda sabaka penemu pasal utai tu, arap ka sida iya support penemu diri enggau ‘hypothesis’ diri empu. This should be purely academic and nothing is right or wrong.
