Taja Dunggat seduai Enche udah begulai melaki bini serta bisi anak, Chala endang agi enda nyamai ati ngagai Dunggat meda ka enda jadi enggau iya, enda nitih ka semaia seduai ka dulu.Nyadi sakali indai Lemenya, indu sida ari Lubang Baya, bisi nemuai kili ngagai kaban iya di Kumpang. Ninga indai Lemenya deka nemuai kili ngagai rumah sida Dunggat, Chala lalu ngasoh iya mai dua iti ilom pinang ngagai Dunggat seduai Enche. Apai Ramba nyerang Ulu Ai
Udah nya baru Apai Ramba seduai Apai Jega, tuai serang orang Kumpang, matak bala besai mansang nyerang deka ngelangar menoa menoa Ulu Ai. Meda bala apai Ramba merau datai ari ili, Jeburie lalu ngasoh sida ngetu. Sida enggai ngetu. Tang Jeburie ngumbok sida ngetu, nya alai sida lalu ngetu dia. Jeburie nanya ka kebuah sida bebala maioh.
“Kami tu deka ngayau Mandau, ngayau Sumping di Ulu Ai,” ko saut Apai Ramba. Ninga saut Apai Ramba munyi nya, Jeburie enda ngasoh, ko iya “nama kabuah kita deka kiroh jauh ngayau ka Lubang Baya, ka Nanga Tiga enggau ka Nanga Mujan.”
“Enggai enda kin ka kami,” ko saut Apai Ramba, “kami tu baka udok enggai enda nitih ka bekau lubang kaki babi.”
“Nama kabuah kita deka kiroh ngelaban wong, ngelaban riam kulu kin?” ko Jeburie.
“Dini endor munsoh ke semak ko de?” ko Apai Ramba.
“Oh, damping munsoh kami di menoa tu,” ko Jeburie. “Enda de nemu rumah Tegaran, rumah Jengkilan di Nanga Musing, nya meh rumah orang ke beburong raya, beburong rindang. Sida nya enti malam bekupan di batu anchau, enti pagi bejembi di puchok galau.” (Reti nya, enti malam sida nyalai antu pala olih ngayau di Kumpang, enti siang betaroh di sadau.) Bala Apai Ramba Ngalah ka Musing

Udah tembu bejako enggau Jeburie, Apai Ramba lalu mai bala iya mudik. Datai sida di Nanga Tebelian dia sida ngetu. Ko Apai Ramba, “Samua kita ke bedarat nya dudi, nyadi aku merau dulu. Enti kira bala aku udah nuntong ba pangkalan orang Musing, nya baru kita angkat ngerembing ngalah ka rumah.”
Udah meri jako nya ngagai bala maioh, prau Apai Ramba lalu angkat mudik kulu. Sangkai prau sida ba pangkalan orang Musing, sida betemu enggau indu siko benong mandi. Apai Ramba lalu mesan ka Tegaran seduai Jengkilan ba indu tu ngasoh seduai nurun betemu enggau iya ba pangkalan sida Musing.
Enda lama udah nya datai Tegaran nyandik kambut enggau Jengkilan nyandik kongap. Serta datai seduai dia, Apai Ramba lalu ngamuk. Seduai sama parai dia enda berandau. Udah parai Tegaran seduai Jengkilan, bala besai pan datai nuntong lalu ngalah ka rumah. Sida munoh tiga puloh iko tinggal bala lelaki ke udah nyau berikan ka danau Majang. Udah alah rumah nya baru bala ingat ka jako Jeburi ke enda ngasoh munoh bini Jengkilan. Tang sida nadai meda bangkai bini Jengkilan dia.
Nyadi bini Jengkilan tadi leboh rumah ke deka dialah ka sida Apai Ramba, iya benong nempa periok tanah beselap pua tekalong. Nya alai iya ulih ngerari ka diri ngelesit munsoh nyandik anak. Nyadi anak indu iya ka benama Simpo enda sempat rari, nya alai iya ditangkap Apai Ramba.
Bala Apai Ramba Pulai Ngetu ba Pangkalan Unggang “Gerasi”
Udah rumah orang Nanga Musing alah, Apai Ramba lalu mai bala iya pulai. Dirantau ai leboh sida mansa rumah Unggang “Gerasi” di Rantau Sandong, Apai Ramba mai bala iya ngetu laban deka madah ngagai Unggang “Gerasi” sida iya udah ngelangar rumah Tegaran seduai Jengkilan di Nanga Musing. Ninga rita sida, Unggang “Gerasi” tekenyit bendar ati ninga sida udah munoh orang baik. Iya lalu nurun ari rumah nangkin nyabor lalu mai bala Apai Ramba bepantap, tang bala Apai Ramba enggai. Apai Ramba lalu nusoi ngagai Unggang “Gerasi” kabuah iya ngalah ka rumah orang Nanga Musing ari tegal tusoi Jeburie, bini Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”, sida Nanga Musing nyau jadi ka pintu bunuh, mantu sida Lubang Baya munoh orang Kumpang.
Unggang “Gerasi” madah ka diri nadai kala mimpi ka sida Nanga Musing kala enggau orang Ulu Ai ngalah ka Kumpang. “Tang nya petenah Jeburie,” ko Unggang “Gerasi”. Iya madah ka pengawa Jeburie nya nyabong orang belaya.
Bala Apai Ramba ngetu ba pangkalan Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”.
Udah tembu berandau enggau Unggang “Gerasi”, Apai Ramba lalu mai anembiak iya undor kili. Datai sida ba pengkalan Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” di Rantau Panjai, sida dibai Apai Ramba ngetu dia.
Leboh iya betemu enggau Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”, dia iya lalu madah ka perau sida sarat laban pala orang Musing. “Enti de deka nanam leka semakau ba amau dan kara di Nanga Musing, mudik de kulu,” ko bungah Apai Ramba enggau Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”.
Ninga jako Apai Ramba, Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” udu bendar ringat. Iya ngeransi lalu ngerinsai ka tanju sepiak, lalu rarat magang pagar enggau lantai-lantai tanju ka bisi dia. Iya lalu mai sida Apai Ramba bamok, tang Apai Ramba enggai nya alai sida lalu undur pulai kili.
Bala Apai Ramba Ngetu di Bui
Datai sida di Nanga Bui, sida lalu ngetu ba rumah Untu, ba rumah Bulan enggau ba rumah Bantin.
“Dini alai kita ngayau?” ko Untu.
“Dia,” ko Apai Ramba, “di Nanga Musing.”
“Bulih kita?” ko Untu nanya baru.
“Bulih,” ko saut Apai Ramba, “pala 30, tangkap 30, tajau 30.”
Leboh Bantin tiga Untu enggau Bulan meda tangkap, sida tapeda ka Simpo anak Jengkilan. Sida lalu madah ka diri deka nebus Simpo ngagai Apai Ramba, laban iya tak anak petunggal sida.
“Tau, enti kita deka nebus iya enggau tajau menaga nyengenda tutup enggau setawak selabuan,” ko Apai Ramba.
Sida setuju serta lalu nebus Simpo. Simpo pan lalu tinggal Nanga Bui dia.
Orang Ulu Ai Nyerang Orang Kumpang
Enda lama udah orang Musing udah dialah ka Apai Ramba, alai Unggang “Gerasi” ngasoh sida Sumping, Naga, Ujan, Berara, Mandau, Gong enggau Sumok nyerang Kumpang bebalas ka orang Musing. Bala sida tu dibai Unggang “Gerasi” nyuong Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” di Rantau Panjai.
“Enti iya enggai,” ko Unggang “Gerasi”, “bunoh iya olih kitai, laban orang Musing punggor ari patenah bini iya Jeburie.”
Udah tembu aum, Unggang “Gerasi” lalu mai sida nurun ngayau nyengkaum bala Baketan. Datai sida di Nanga Pan ari ulu rumah Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”, sida ngetu lalu belangkau dia ke endor sida begiga ka ipoh enggau begaga ka laja. Ari nya mega sida Naga seduai Sumping beseruan ngagai Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” ka Rantau Panjai.
Datai di rumah Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”, seruan tu lalu madah ka diri diasoh Naga seduai Sumping mai Temenggong enggau sida nyerang orang Kumpang bebalas ka pemarai orang Musing.
“Oh, kati ka aku enggau kita ngayau, tak kaban mentua, kaban ipar aku magang di Selindong, di Bukong,” Ko saut Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”.
Ninga Temenggong enggai enggau, bala seruan lalu deka munoh iya. Meda sida nyau deka munoh iya, nya baru Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” madah ka diri deka enggau ngayau, enti bala deka dulu nulong iya nguta rumah iya, awak ka enda mudah dialah ka munsoh nyelawai. Bala maioh pan lalu nguta rumah Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” lalu tembu sahari laban Baketan bengat maioh tuboh.
Leboh sida agi betatam ba Rantau Panjai, bala Apai Ramba ari Nanga Kumpang pan bisi ninga bala ari Ulu Ai deka datai bebala maioh nyerang sida. Nya alai sida lalu sedia nganti enggau bala wan ai sida jaga ba Nanga Saremat.
Lemai nya bala sida Sumping enggau Naga lalu undor ari ulu. Malam nya kejang sida deka mansa Nanga Saremat, wan ai sida Apai Ramba meda api insap ari jauh bakaliau. Meda nya, bala wan ai lalu beguai pulai ngagai tugong bala madah ka diri bisi meda api munsoh bakaliau undor ari ulu. Tang sida Apai Ramba enda arap ka berita ka dibai bala wan ai, nya alai iya lalu ngasoh anembiak bukai enggau bala wai ai ngabas baru.

Sida enggai nguji munoh Kibong laban iya bangat ipar sida.
Nyadi Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala”, laban takut ka orang munoh iya, ngenudi ka diri bejalai ari bala maioh. Iya irau bendar ka bala Apai Ramba jai ati enggau iya.

Betempoh di Nanga Piyat
Datai bala Sumping enggau bala Nuga di Nanga Piyat, sida lalu dikangau ka bala Apai Ramba agi mai bebuti, laban ati empai tembu bebuti dili tadi, ko Apai Ramba. Ninga nya sida Sumping enggau sida Naga lalu nyangkai ka diri dia, lalu berengkah belaban baru. Nyadi anembiak Sumping ka benama Taboh dulu mutus ka pala musoh lalu dibai iya ngagai tugong bala iya.
Enda lama udah nya anembiak Naga ke benama Sibat, leboh iya ka nitih ka munsoh, nemu semua anembiak Apai Ramba ka bakal dianjong sida ka ulu Piyat. Leboh tu Sibat lalu bedengah rawai empat, lalu enggi Enturan Besi bedengah sigi. Ninga bala Apai Ramba ke udah bakal dianjong ka ulu Piyat, bala Sumping seduai Naga lalu ngansak ka munsoh kin ka, lalu munoh samoa munsoh ka bakal nya tadi. Meda anembiak diri alah, Apai Ramba seduai Apai Jega lalu rari ngidup ka diri.
Apai Ramba Nyerang Ulu Ai

Nyau kelama Sumping seduai Naga udah pindah, nya baru Temenggong Medana “Simpi Pala” mai bala iya pindah ka Seriang. Dalam Taun 1868, leboh Penghulu Gerinang “Nitik” seduai menyadi iya Penghulu Unggat jadi tuai menoa, dia seduai bisi undur ka Nanga Ngemah betemu enggau Tuan Resident J.B. Cruishank ke bisi nemuai kia ka maia nya. Leboh Tuan Resident nanya ka berita, Penghulu Unggat lalu nyaut madah semua menoa likun magang semina iya irau ati ka siko tuai Iban ka benama Balang ke baru pulai ngayau ngalah ka Bansa Lusum. Penghulu Unggat madah ka Tuan Resident, Balang enggau Ringgau bisi dua kali mai seduai menyadi iya munuh Tuan Resident. Where was Bjg Timpang Berang located at the time of Nanang and Luyoh’s surrender? Was it already at Rentap’s fort at Sadok Mount, even before the surrender of Nanang & Luyoh? It was used by Rentap during battle of 3rd Sadok expedition.
Perhaps Rentap asked Nanang & Luyoh to build their longhouse stockade at the nearby stockade and to combine foreces in defence at Sadok fort during any attack by Brooke. The Nanang & Luyoh’s stockade was actually at the rear of Rentap’s stockade, wasn’t it but the path to it was used by Brooke to advance to Rentap’s stockade which was easier to drag on Bjg Sadok up the adjacent ridge to shoot Rentap’s stockade on the opposite higher ridge.
Rentap probably refused to handover Aji’s gunpowder becasue it was to be used for defence of Sadok?
Charles Brooke wrote that he offered Rentap to surrende rin his Tens Year in sarawak book but Rentap refused. Sandin wrote as in Iban migration article that Brooke refused to offer Rentap amnesty because he killed their staff white men.
Rentap’s men took the BTB from Nanang’s fort to Rentap stockade after Nanang and Luyoh left Bukit Sadok.
Is it possible that Nanang and Luyoh preferred or forced to build their own longhouses and stockade at another ridge adjacent to the Rentap’s Sadok Mount because there was limited space on the Rentap’s stockade and they both preferred to live separately as 2 groups which can combine forces as and when required such as during attack by Brooke?
Rentap simply do not have any plan or strategy, except planning his own escape route. He was not taking up leadership role of the whole defense team against the Rajah. That show his lack of leadership quality and dominance in leading a bigger group.
There was also no pact or agreement amongst them.
Did Brooke use the path to Nanang & Luyoh’s longhouse stockade to Rentap’s Sadok stockade, which was easier to follow by Brooke’s troop and to bring up the heavy cannon Bujang Sadok?
Orang Kaya Nanang & Luyoh joined Libau “Rentap” on Mount Sadok.
After these defeats, OKP Nanang and Luyoh joined Libau “Rentap” at Sadok. They brought to the mountain a gun known as “Bujang Timpang Berang” which their father had captured at Sambas many decades earlier. This famous gun can be seen today at Fort Lily, Betong, Saribas.
From their stockade at Sadok, OKP Nanang and Luyoh and their followers together with Libau “Rentap” fighters supported Sharif Masahor’s rebellion. They openly joined the latter in his defence at Mukah and Igan until his defeat in 1861.
Two months after the deportation of Sharif Masahor to Singapore in 1861, the Tuan Besar, James Brooke-Brooke, and his brother the Tuan Muda, Charles Brooke, led a big expedition against OKP Nanang and Libau “Rentap” at Sadok. On this expedition, taught by past experience, the Tuan Besar took with him a big gun known as “Bujang Sadok”, to storm Libau “Rentap” stronghold. This gun is today exhibited in the Sarawak Museum in Kuching.
The force went up the Layar River to Nanga Tiga. From there, it went up the Tiput, crossed the Spak and went on to the foot of Sadok Mountain. While assembling there, the Tuan Besar and the Tuan Muda informed all the Iban chiefs of the lower Saribas and Skrang that the government had no intention of continuing its quarrel with OKP Nanang and Luyoh, provided that they agreed to surrender themselves as soon as possible. This proclamation pleased the divided Saribas Iban. They agreed to send the most trustworthy messengers to OKP Nanang and his brothers on the mountain to urge them to surrender to the government. All the Iban leaders agreed to send the Bangat chiefs under the leadership of Jabu apai Umpang and his brother Ngadan apai Rembi to meet OKP Nanang and Luyoh in their stronghold.
If Nanang and Luyoh brought up Bujang Timpang Berang to their stockade at Sadok Mount, why did they leave it there with a few cannon balls when they surrender, to be taken up by Rentap troop to Rentap’s own fort? Even if it heavy to be carried away, the Raja should have instructed his troop to disable Bjg Timpang Berang after Nanang and Luyoh’s surrender and before starting to bombard Rentap’s fort?
By leaving Bujang Timpang Berang and not disabling it, which was later taken up by Rentap to his stockade for his defence, it appears that Brooke won the battle by a stroke of luck when Rentap’s gunner Rajau was shot by the first shot by Brooke’s troop during the exchange of fire, which soaked the gun powder.
How to disable a cannon? Destroy it with explosive? or plug the firing hole with whatever? We just do not have the technology yet for that.
What is the name of “menalan bedil” (ridge) from which Bujang Sadok was fired to Rentap’s stockade? Is this menalan bedil located at Nanang and Luyoh’s longhouse site or nearby it?
Didn’t Brooke know that BTB had been left at Nanang & Luyoh’s stockade? Didn’t Brooke know of BTB’s existence even after Nanang & Luyoh’s surrender?
Didn’t Nanang & Luyoh tell Brooke that they had left BTB at their stockade which can be taken by Rentap for his ultimate defence?
It appears that Brooke didn’t know about the existence of BTB and that it hb left by Nanang & Luyoh after their surrender at their abandoned stockade. Otherwise, Brooke could/should have asked his men to plug the firing hole to disable BTB so that it couldn’t be used by Rentap.
It appears Brooke didn’t know about BTB even after defeating Nanang & Luyoh’s stockade at Sg Spak earlier after which Nanang & Luyoh brought BTB up to Bukit Sadok. Otherwise, Brooke could have asked for BTB to be surrendered to him or searched for it by his troop because it is definitely a formidable weapon at the right hands. Charles Brooke just wrote that BTB was written 1515 and plugged after Rentap’s defeat in his diary Ten Years In Sarawak.
It appears BTB was probably not used By Nanang & Luyoh during the battle of Sg Spak because its heavy weight would slow its quick removal from the stockade immediately. Another cannon was thrown into the river which sometimes hooked fishing net as per Sandin. This was perhaps to disguise the existence of BTB.
Or did Nanang & Luyoh purposely leave BTB at their stockade to be taken up by Rentap for his defence after knowing that Rentap got some gunpowder from Aji, perhaps with intension not to further alienate Rentap after their surrender to Brooke without consulting Rentap and for possible reconciliation in the future after Brooke’s expedition?
Because “there was no formal pack pact or agreement among them”, it must be difficult for Rentap to take the lead and even if he wanted to do so, would Nanang & Luyoh agree to it?
It appears both groups just retired to the highest mountain at the edge of their territorial domain which they thought the furthest and most difficult terrain to be reached by Brooke in effort to discourage him to attack them further.
Each group had its own exit strategy. Nanang & Luyoh refused to run away anymore from their hard-earnt menua in Saribas and thus willing to surrender to Brooke while Rentap was forced to run away because he was denied amnesty/truce by Brooke for killing of Brooke’s staff.
It appears Brooke refused to offer amnesty to Rentap in reality and seeked revenge for it at least by destruction of Rentap’s Sadok stockade which was regarded/declared as a symbol of Iban’s rajahship (Raja Ulu) in competition with Brooke’s rajahship. James Brooke previously had sent Raja Muda Hashim and his family back to Brunei in order not to shadow his own rajahship in Kuching and to have his own allies in Brunei.
Charles Brooke later wrote in his diary in hindsight that he offered Rentap amnesty for 10 jars which Brooke thought can be paid easily by Rentap to show Brooke’s diplomacy/good publicity especially in England to cover their harshness/revenge in dealing with Dayak especially after British’s inquiry into James Brooke in Singapore regarding the battle at Beting Marau.
Charles Brooke’s dealing with murders in Sarawak appears to resemble Dayak’s own dealing with murders ie to seek revenge for death (blood for blood or eye for eye) eg in the cases with Rentap and murderers of Fox and Steele, except where pati nyawa adat is applicable. Most expeditions in Sarawak were sent by Brooke after murders to punish those murderers in their effort to stop headhunting and to achieve peace and safety for trade and normal life.
Sandin’s exertion that Brooke refused to pardon Rentap is most probably true, isn’t it?
I believe Rajah Charles Brooke was not easily discouraged to pursue Rentap wherever he build his fort. He has all the resources and he was very familiar with the Iban country. He has a very good knowledge of the Iban people as he had lived among them, especially at Skrang fort. He also witnessed the death of Allen and Stewart by Rentap’s men. Charles Brooke also did not react fast enough to prevent the killing of those two officers. Thus, I believe his obsession with bringing Rentap to justice was more of a personal issue.
I’m also sure that Raja Charles Brook know about the BTB and other arsenals that Nanang and Rentap have. I’m sure the Skrang Ibans allied to him must have informed him about that.
If Brooke knows about BTB and the quarrel about the gunpowder, why didn’t Brooke instruct his men to disable BTB (or throw it down the ridge to be inaccesible to Rentap) first before the start of bombardment of Rentap’s stockade at Sadok Mount? Didn’t Brooke know that Rentaps’ men had taken BTB to their stockade after Nanang & Luyoh’s surrender? Or did Brooke really want a fair fight and exchange of fires? I don’t think so.
Why should Brooke throw down BTB. It belongs to Nanang and Luyoh. Nothing is fair in an Iban way of fighting their enemy.
I agree that Brooke was determined to catch Rentap or kill him in revenge for the killings of Alan Lee and Steward earlier. But why didn’t Brooke pursue Rentap after his defeat at Sadok Mount if he really wished to bring him to justice, which may end up as death sentence by “kerising” to the heart?
Did Brooke let him to succumb to his old age? Or Brooke didn’t pursue Rentap further because he hid himself and keep low profile after his defeat at Sadok Mount? Was there a gentlemen’s agreement? Why did Brooke cast a Rentap’s face in bronze in Sarawak in tribute to his strong enemies?
Also, why didn’t Rentap really run away farthest from Brooke’s territory eg to ulu Rajang or Brunei and kept himself adjacent to the Skrang region?
Why don’t Brooke asked Rentap’s old allies like Nanang, Luyoh or Linggir to pursue him? Or would these Saribas Leaders pursue Rentap if Brooke asked them to do it? Those Saribas leaders would not attack Rentap for no reason. They do not have dispute with Rentap men. Traditionally, there were various ways to settle disputes between communities before it turn to bloodshed as what happens to Batang Ai people. The Saribas Iban leaders uphold these traditional values and adat closely and not loosely. Rentap also knew that Saribas Iban leaders would not pursue him and that was why he never escaped further from Julau region.
The bronze face cast at Kuching was not that of Rentap. He never see or took any picture of Rentap closely to be cast into bronze. If ever a Brooke Rajah wanted to remember his Iban allies, they would have cast a picture of Lundu Iban Chief, OK Temenggong Jugah, whose sons and son-in-law died for Brooke’s cause.
Brooke should disable BTB or throw it down the ridge first or take the cannon balls for BTB, immediately after Nanang and Luyoh’s surrender to avoid it being taken by Rentap to be used against Brooke but this was not done by Brooke and thus BTB was taken by Rentap for his defence and attack against Brooke with Bjg Sadok.
So, I’m perplexed by the Brooke’s non-full proof military strategy which let BTB (after left by its rightful owners, Nanang & Luyoh) to fall to Rentap’s hands for his defence against Brooke.
Or was BTB already brought by Aji earlier to Rentap’s stockade at Sadok mount which was their last point of defence?
Was not disabling BTB after left by Nanang and Luyoh after their surrender a mistake or overlook by Brooke?
Whether Nanang & Luyoh just left BTB or Aji brought BTB up to Rentap’s stockade, use of BTB can really balcance the fight between Rentap and Brooke.
When Brooke recorded that Rentap’s men shouted to challenge Brooke to bring on the biggest gun from England after the failure of 2nd Sadok expedition, I think Rentap’s men or probably Aji’s men already alluded to the existence of a big cannon with them ie BTB, probably to be matched by Brooke.
With existence of BTB plus the thick belian walled stockade stituated on a difficult to access Sadok mount, no wonder that Aji and Rentap’s camp sounded so confident of defending their stockade, as recorded by Brooke in his diary after the fall of Sadok.
During this period, Brooke never mentioned of existence of any big cannon in his diary. He only mentioned it after the conquest of Sadok Mount after his 3rd expedition.
BTB was originally brought by Aji’s men up the Sadok. It was then used by Nanang and Luyoh after Aji’s death at Sungai Langit.
Taunting the enemy was common in Iban warfare. The Sadok defenders never knew what arsenal the Rajah men would bring. The defenders were unaware that BTB cannon was an old Dutch ship cannon while the Rajah Brooke’s canon (Bujang Sadok) was the latest cannon that gave a great tactical advantage in attacking Rentap’s fort. The Ibans have little knowledge of contemporary weapons used in major warfare. They rely only on their bold bravery and fighting spirit. That was the main reason for Aji’s death. I’m sure his brother Nanang and Luyoh learn from that misjudgement and learn the the consequences of prolonged warfare with the Rajah.
I agree that Saribas leaders won’t comply with Brooke’s instruction to pursue Rentap with non-existence of disputes between them and the existence of Iban adat like palit mata and pati nyawa or even bebancak babi or bambu madi/kaban or gawai batimbang.
However, Brooke could instruct or ask his lower Skrang Iban allies especially those who beheaded Aji’s head to pursue Rentap after his escape/retreat from Sadok mount. There was no record of Brooke asking anyone to do so in his diary of Ten years in Sarawak but this request could be only verbal (not recorded) if it did exist, or the lower Skrang Iban allies refused to pursue Rentap after Brooke’s victory at Sadok 3rd attack or it did not exist at all which means Brooke just let age to terminate Rentap.
So “nothing is a fair fight in Iban way”?
Did Nanang & Luyoh purposely leave BTB at their stockade after their surrender to be taken by Rentap and created story that they quarreled with Rentap about retaking gunpowder in order to hide/camouflage the fact about the existence of BTB and that BTB is now in Rentap’s hands to create a surprise for Brooke during his attack on Rentap’s stockade?
BTB might give Rentap advantage if his gunner was not wounded first, early in the exchange of fire with Brooke’s Bjg Sadok.
Is it possible that Rentap burnt Nanang’s stockade in order to mislead Brooke to believe that Nanang and Luyoh did really surrender, without giving any advantage to Rentap such as leaving BTB to be taken and used by Rentap in his defence agaist Brooke’s attack?
Nanang had the chance to surrender but Rentap was not given any clemency/pardon by Brooke for killing Alan Lee and Steward earlier so he had to defend his longhouse fortress.
I don’t understand the statement that “BTB was brought up Sadok by Aji but was used by Nanang and Luyoh after Aji’s death at Sg Langit”. Does this mean the sequence of events is Aji brought up BTB to Rentap’s stockade (any idea when/after which event?), then Nanang and Puyoh took BTB from Rentap’s stockade to their newly built nearby stockade after Aji’s death and then leave it at their stockade after their surrender to Brooke and finally Rentap took BTB to his stockade for his defence against Brooke?
Right, Aji used the BTB to defend his fort at Sungai Langit. It was Nanang and Luyoh who used it to defend their fort at Sungai Spak and later brought the BTB to defend their fort at Sadok after the death of Aj in 1858.
I think although “The Sadok defenders never knew what arsenal the Rajah men would bring.”, they certainly knew how big a cannon to be brought up by Brooke based on the size of BTB and thus their challenging Brooke to bring your bisggest gun from England.
What is the tactical advantage that the latest cannon Bjg Sadok gave to Brooke compared to old cannon BTB dated 1515? Longer range, higher accuracy or what?
I thought Nanang, Luyoh and Aji plus Rajau on Rentap’s side could master BTB well after their expedition to Java and how to make gunpowder.
Sometimes big numbers can overwhelm the small number of enemy although better equipped with gun/muskets which had to be reloaded after each firing (not automatic reloading) eg 10,000 to 1000 but in case of Iban fighting against Brooke’s numerous attacks, the Iban were always outnumbered as well. The Iban could only inflict damage based on surprise attacks (ngupa / negah).
Perhaps Aji was misled by spell baju kebal given by Sharif Masahor or sumpah Iban during pengap to believe that he is invisible and kebal that caused him to bravely cross Sg Langit in order to attack Brooke’s troop. I’m still wondering why Aji was alone in the attack? Where were his followers? Hiding? Also why did he appear in the open, why didn’t he entice the enemy to follow and search for him while he ngipa them like what Linggir and Abg Apong did during the battle with Tmg Jugah of Lundu?
The Iban strategy in fighting their enemies is not to engage in open battle, unless they know that they can win or if they have no other option. They focus on strategy rather than tactical open warfare. They are smart and well organised and use mobility and suprise to attack and to retreat. Their boat is small in construction which they can easily maneuvre. Their strategy is focussed on mobility, logistic and good recognissance and suprise attack and leave before the enemy could properly react. They utilise fierced experience and organised warriors to attack selected targets in coastal areas and near large rivers and their success were due to superior strategic mobility.
In attacking, the Ibans avoid that is strong and only attack what is weak. They send experience men to do recognisance to learn the enemy’s location and situation and exploit the weakness. They attack the enemy’s small out post and not the larger main army. They make use of experienced & discipline warriors to carry out main task.
I never know that Aji have baju kebal given by Sheriff Mashor. All I knew was that Aji did not obey Kumang’s instruction not to pursue the enemy to the river in his dream before the attack. There were 7 followers with him when Aji was killed.
Is it confirmed that Aji used the BTB to defend his fort at Sungai Langit? So who carried / take away BTB after Aji’s death? Why didn’t the 7 warriors with Aji attack/ambush the Brooke’s bala together with Aji? Is it confirmed that “It was Nanang and Luyoh who used it (BTB) to defend their fort at Sungai Spak and later brought the BTB to defend their fort at Sadok after the death of Aji in 1858.”? If this is true, why did Nanang and Luyoh just leave BTB after their surrender at Sadok and attempt to recover the gunpowder left by the late Aji or why didn’t Brooke disable BTB after Nanang and Luyoh’s surrender, knowing very well that Rentap would take BTB to his stockade for his defence against Brooke’s attack?
Did Nanang and Luyoh purposely leave BTB to Rentap after their surrender? Did they intentionally not tell Brooke about BTB? Did they purposely create the quarrel story of their try to recover Aji’s gunpowder from Rentap? Did they throw another cannon into Spak river to hide the existence of BTB?
Why didn’t Aji defend his stockade at Sg Langit by waiting to fire BTB at Brooke’s bala instead of attacking Brooke’s in the open shallow riverbed? It must be heavy and slow to run away with shouldering BTB (disan ngena batang baka buloh betong) by at least a few men or can one guy ngemak BTB within a selabit or lanji? How many kg is BTB?
Why do you need to go into so much detail about BTB or Aji? What is your motive here? Is this an inquiry or are you being sinister?. For your info. Aji body was retrieved and given proper burial as any other warrior before him. His head was returned by the Skrang Iban for fear of reprisal from Aji’s men and was buried at the same place where his body was buried earlier. Remember, Aji and Linggir had helped those Skrang people under Apai Dendang (Gasing Gila) when they were about to be attacked by Rajah Brooke few years earlier. Linggi (Aji father in law) would have attacked them had they did not return Aji’s head. The 7 warriors with him were from Julau (Lintong Moahari’s men) and Aji’s own men.
If BTB is a threat to Rajah Brooke, why didn’t Rajah Brooke men retrieve BTB from abandoned Nanang’s fort themselves? Isn’t it shows that the Brooke know they have a better weapon than Rentap, Nanang or Luyoh that he bother much about BTB.
As I have said before, It was a mistake that Aji make to pursue his enemy, instead of waiting for the attack on his fort. The Iban strategy in fighting their enemies is not to engage in open battle, unless they know that they can win and Aji’s boldness made that fatal mistake. They should have stayed in the fort and leave quickly if they were overrun by their enemy.
The same apples to Nanahg and Luyoh at Sungai Spak when they use BTB to defend their fort. They were just waiting for the Rajah to advance, and the superior weapon won the battle. I’m sure they both learn the inferiority of BTB compared to Raja Brooke weapons.

Mindu did not inherit Aji’s bilek. She was adopted by Aji’s sister whose husband was Aji’s own warrior who was also with him when Aji was shot at Sungai Langit.

Understanding the Saribas Iban’s history is probably more than half of the total Iban’s story in Sarawak.
When Brooke didn’t retrieve or disable or throw BTB after Nanang’s surrender and if Rajau was not shot by early shot, there could be damage by BTB on Brooke’s side. That means perhaps equal chance of winning or successful defending by Rentap.
Brooke didn’t comment on superiority of Bjg Sadok over BTB. It was said to be an exchange of fire with 17 shots by Bjg Sadok.
Brooke side of the story is over exaggerated. When he mentioned that there were about 3,000 Rentap men defending Sadok, the number given was over exaggerated. The whole population of Ulu Skrang from about 5 long houses, including women, children and old folks was never that much people. The most number of able bodied men Rentap would have would be about 100 people, out of which, 20 were actual frontline warriors. When defending their fort, the women, children and old folks were sent to safety much earlier as a precaution. Valuable properties and food were hidden away somewhere safe. Thus when the fort was destroyed, those warriors would make a quick escape.
Its not rocket science to know that BTB is inferior to Bujang Sadok. BTB was an old ship cannon mounted on a wooden frame while Bujang Sadok was mounted on a wheel which is more flexible, mobile and more powerful. The Ibans have the small arms like chinese canons, but they never knew the ballistic knowledge and do not have competency on how to maximise the impact of their weapons for effective use against the enemy. They only know how to load and fire those cannons. For that reason, I believe, the Rajah never fear the weapon used by the Ibans in defending their fort.
Nanang and Luyoh did not surrender at Nanga Spak. They were defeated and their fort were destroyed. Then they escape and build another fort at Bukit Sadok, near Rentap’s fort. But Rajah Brooke did not destroy BTB for whatever reason. Thus BTB was brought by Nanang and Luyoh to Sadok to be used again to defend his fort there.
I pity Aji for attacking alone. Did he prevent his warriors from attacking together with him and allow him to attack alone? So Lintong’s group was with Aji during his final hours at Sg Langit. Who were Aji’s own warriors and Lintong’s warriors, if you don’t mind to tell. Who married Aji’s daughter?

It was his warriors who actually prevented him to attack the Rajah forces head on as they knew they could not win the fight in an open battle. Their forces were very much smaller in number compared to thousands of Brooke forces.It was against their usual battle tactic or strategy.
I’m not sure who were the Julau’s warriors besides Uyu Apai Ikom and Lintong Moahari who accompanied Aji at that time. Another warrior named Mang was Aji’s brother in law who was also with him during the attack.
When firing the cannon, the angle of the projectile is very important, I guess. If they can tilt the BTB upwards, it might reach Brooke’s bala on the ridge where where Bujang Sadok was stationed.
If the power of BTB can’t shot its cannon ball to reach the ridge where Bujang Sadok and Brooke’s force were located, then perhaps this was why Brooke did care about BTB’s existence. If this was the case, then Bujang Sadok was more powerful than BTB ie it could fire over a longer distance.
Obviously, the Rajah Brooke have better knowledge about weapons of war than the Ibans. The Ibans were only aided by their bold bravery and the terrain. But the Rajah Brooke have all the war resources to beat the terrain and the Iban rebels. The Ibans were inferior when it comes to open warfare or battle. They simply do not have the numbers and war resources advantage. I believe, it’s not rocket science for Brooke to figure it out. The Ibans lost even in psychological warfare which include taunting and during negotiating the truce. Why do Nanang have to pay 400 jars as deposit for accepting the truce? The Brooke knew that, without those jars, Nanang would not be able to finance his campaign and thus weaken his influence and support. It’s not his arsenal of weapons (including BTB) and number of warriors that the Brooke fear. To the British or the Rajah Brooke, war is a mean to achieve absolute Political control or influence. To the Ibans, war is to achieve control over other tribes and farmland and as deterrent to other races (like Brunei Government) who wants political control over the Ibans, which they have not done successfully for ages. The Brunei Sultanate have tried to use deceit and fear to control the Iban country and failed to win political control over Iban territory.
Yes, it seems Brooke overexaggerated the number of their enemies eg during the battle of Beting Marau to claim the pirate head money, I guess.
Wasn’t Aji who brought up BTB to Rentap’s stockade at Sadok Mount before his death at Sg Langit, making this stockade as his last stance together with Rentap? Vernon’ website stated there was a meeting at Rentap’s stockade whether to attack Brooke’s force before they reached Sadok Mount or just defend Sadok stockade. It was during this meeting that Aji’s wife Dimah was said to throw away (nikauke) pua kumbu lebor api to outside of the stockade and said that she didn’t know that Aji was a coward (buyan). Thus, Aji attacked the Brooke’s force at Sg Langit, as if committing suicide to prove that he was not afraid of death (a true bujang berani), I guess. Before Aji’s death, Nanang and Luyoh were not rebellious against Brooke.
My analysis is that Aji built his fort at Sungai Langit. Rajah Brooke account also mentioned attacking Aji’s stockade at Sungai Langit (not at Bukit Sadok) where they lured Aji’s men to come out after taunting them the whole day and night. This also mean that BTB was used to defend Aji Stockade at Sungai Langit. Nanang and Luyoh was also with Aji’s men at that time. After the death of Aji, then Nanang and Luyoh built a stockade at Nanga Spak and brought BTB to defend it. After their defeat at Nanga Spak, Nanang and Luyoh built their stockade at Sadok near Rentap’s Fort. This was the time, I believe, BTB was brought up the Sadok by Nanang and Luyoh.

Disunity among the Layar and Padeh Iban under Bunyau Apai Bakir and Aji.
When the fort was built at Betong under the joint supervision of Mr. J.B. Craickshank and Bunyau apai Bakir in 1858, Aji, the third son of the late OKP Dana “Bayang”, fought against all who had submitted to Brooke rule in the lower Layar River.
At the completion of the fort, Aji and his warriors from the Padeh and Ulu Layar attacked it with a few exchanges of fire, showing their complete disagreement with the people of the lower Layar under chief Bunyau Apai Bakir. At this time, Linggir “Mali Lebu” and all the people of Paku were completely neutral, as they had relatives in both of the quarelling groups.
Due to Aji’s action, the Tuan Muda led a force from the Skrang fort, composed of the best Skrang and Balau fighters, to punish Aji and his supporters. When the Tuan Muda arrived at Betong he was joined by the Iban and Malays of Betong under Mr. Watson, the Officer-in-Charge, including Bakir, Malina and the other fortmen.
It was never a bloody attack as the Rajah described it. It was just a show of protest to the Brooke Government and not to protest against Bunyau Apai Bakir who was employed by the Brooke Government. Aji’s son-in-law was also working as a Fortmen too. All the Saribas Ibans under Bunyau never engage in any fight or open confrontation with Aji’s men. They acted only as guide to the Brooke forces. In Fact, they help to lure these Government forces into Aji’s place of ambush where the forces suffered many casualties. You can see that The Saribas Iban strategy were much smarter and different from Rentap’s strategy. For that reason, the Saribas people survived to this day. Rentap only want the Saribas people to defend him with their resources, while he prepares to escape to Julau. The Saribas Iban do not want to be led by Rentap, neither do they want to defend him as Rentap was not their leader or “Raja” as he declared himself to be. Unal Bulan was a smart Ulu Layar Chief who was an observer during the Rajah Attack on Rentap’s fort. He just want to make sure that the battle do not spill over to his territory at Ulu Layar, the route the Rajah forces used on their expedition against Rentap.
Always remember that the Saribas Iban will avoid open confrontation with each other. They applied deceit on their enemies as part of their war strategy to ensure the survival of the Saribas people.
In anger over the death of his brother Aji, Luyoh went to Mukah to negotiate with Sharif Masahor who was also planning to rebel against the Brookes. The Sharif assured him that he would supply gunpowders for those who rebels against the government of Sarawak. Having been assured of this, Luyoh and his brother OKP Nanang built a stockade at the mouth of the Spak tributary so that they could avenge their brother’s death against the Brookes and Bunyau apai Bakir. This stockade was attacked by Mr. Watson and Bakir in 1859.
Within a month of his defeat, OKP Nanang rebuilt the stockade, but it was attacked again by Mr. Watson, Bakir, and Abang Aing. Very shortly after its re¬construction, the doomed fortress was completely demolished.
Orang Kaya Nanang & Luyoh joined Libau “Rentap” on Mount Sadok.
After these defeats, OKP Nanang and Luyoh joined Libau “Rentap” at Sadok. They brought to the mountain a gun known as “Bujang Timpang Berang” which their father had captured at Sambas many decades earlier. This famous gun can be seen today at Fort Lily, Betong, Saribas.
From their stockade at Sadok, OKP Nanang and Luyoh and their followers together with Libau “Rentap” fighters supported Sharif Masahor’s rebellion. They openly joined the latter in his defence at Mukah and Igan until his defeat in 1861.
Two months after the deportation of Sharif Masahor to Singapore in 1861, the Tuan Besar, James Brooke-Brooke, and his brother the Tuan Muda, Charles Brooke, led a big expedition against OKP Nanang and Libau “Rentap” at Sadok. On this expedition, taught by past experience, the Tuan Besar took with him a big gun known as “Bujang Sadok”, to storm Libau “Rentap” stronghold. This gun is today exhibited in the Sarawak Museum in Kuching.
The force went up the Layar River to Nanga Tiga. From there, it went up the Tiput, crossed the Spak and went on to the foot of Sadok Mountain. While assembling there, the Tuan Besar and the Tuan Muda informed all the Iban chiefs of the lower Saribas and Skrang that the government had no intention of continuing its quarrel with OKP Nanang and Luyoh, provided that they agreed to surrender themselves as soon as possible. This proclamation pleased the divided Saribas Iban.
They agreed to send the most trustworthy messengers to OKP Nanang and his brothers on the mountain to urge them to surrender to the government. All the Iban leaders agreed to send the Bangat chiefs under the leadership of Jabu apai Umpang and his brother Ngadan apai Rembi to meet OKP Nanang and Luyoh in their stronghold.
Aji was over confident after successfully thwarted many attempt to attack him by the Rajah forces (with information from the fortmen). In the last attack against him, instead of ambushing the advancing forces, Aji decided to openly challenge and confront the Rajah forces (against the wish of his men). This led to his demise in 1858 and led to his brothers seeking revenge soliciting help from Sharif Masahor in Mukah for firearms.
Thus Sharif Masahor was the supplier of fire arms (bedil) and gun powder to OKP Nanang and his brothers, which they used to defend their fort at Sadok. Rentap have acquired non of these firearms. The Rajah men knows that, and they also knew that the Brooke forces will be many casualty if they attack OKP Nanang’s fort. Thus they prefer to negotiate for non confrontation with OKP Nanang’s men and focus on defeating Rentap. The Brooke forces knew that Rentap fort was formidable because of support from OKP Nanang’s men. The Rajah forces were only interested in killing or capturing Rentap whom they declared as fugitive after the killing of Allan Lee. Thus OKP Nanang and his men took the opportunity to negotiate a peaceful resolution to protect his Padeh and Layar territories.
Rentap appears to be the greatest Iban or Sarawak warrior after his troop killed Alan Lee at Lintang Batang and later Steward and Datu Patinggi Ali at Sungai Lang.
Who said Rentap was the greatest Iban? Saribas people? Definitely not Batang Ai people, or the Sebuyaus, Lundus and Banting people. Maybe politicians said that for their own political agenda or the Military people who do not know the true history of Iban in Sarawak. There were many great past Iban leaders who were more famous and mentioned in Iban literature and oral history. Rentap cannot even defended his Ulu Skrang people against intruders from the Batang Ai, Bugau and the Undup territory. He seek the help of Saribas Iban leaders like Linggir and OKP Dana to defeat those intruders in Ulu Ketungau and Undup. Thus, he cannot be greater than these two prominent Iban leaders. He never led a big war party to attack his enemies, instead Rentap piggyback on these leaders to lead his men to war. The good thing was that Rentap was able to defend his fort against the Rajah forces well, but then again, it was with the help of OKP Nanang’s men and the help of natural terrain which makes it difficult for Brooke forces to defeat his fort. Killing 2 white men and a Malay Chief do not make one a great warrior or leader. Linggir “Mali Lebu” men who faced the whole fleet of Rajah Brooke navy at the battle of Beting Maru did not declare himself as the greatest Iban leader too. Infact, he declared that OKP Dana Bayang was the greatest Iban leader ever as OKP Dana have the leadership quality and influence to unite all the other Iban chiefs in Saribas and Skrang region and led them to raid far away places like Sambas, Pontianak, Mentrado and Singkawang in Kalimantan Indonesia. So, Rentap leadership was a minnow compared those two Saribas leaders during his time. Earlier than that, before the arrival of Rajah Brooke, it was Unggang Lebur Menua who was the greatest Saribas Iban leader, whom other Iban leaders in Saribas and Skrang like to follow in war raids. Thus, a successful Iban leaders were those who can unite the whole community of Iban leaders in the region into his fold, definitely not someone like Libau Rentap. Their leadership qualities were certainly much superior to that of Libau Rentap.
Is it still diplomacy after downriver Iban helped Brooke to attack fellow upstream Iban?
The diplomacy via kinship remains strong in Saribas region despite there are people who helped Brooke forces as I’ve explained before. The Saribas people were more culturally developed and disciplined than to engage in open confrontation with each other, unlike the Batang Ai leaders.
Did Rentap really styled himself as Raja Ulu to be of equivalent status to Rajah Sarawak or this tittle was given/created by Brooke to justify his attack or spread by Rentap’s other adversaries such as ili Skrang who had supported Brooke by that time?
Don’t forget that the Skrang Ili people, despite supporting Brooke, still helped Rentap men, by virtue of their kinsmanship. They were actually the same people who shared common roots and blood relationship is always thicker. The Raja Ulu rhetoric was merely a propaganda slogan he lauded to openly challenge the Brooke Government who treated Rentap as a fugitive, whom they wanted dead or alive.
The Iban of Saribas and Skrang were united under OKP Dana Bayang during their expeditions to places at muara Kapuas and battle of Beting Marau. Even during their surrender at Saribas Treaty, the Saribas was represented by the old Dana himself, Linggir Mali Lebu of Paku and Linggi who was representative of Skrang. Was Linggi an Iban from downstream Skrang?
Linggi was the father-in-law of Aji. He was a Skrang Iban Chief who represented the Skrang Iban during the treaty with Rajah Brooke. OKP Dana was not the Saribas Iban Chief during the Battle of Beting Maru. It was Linggir “Mali Lebu” and his men that was involved at the Battle of Beting Maru on their return from raid at Nanga Rajang region.
Did Rentap somehow know that Nanang and Luyoh might surrender to Brooke and thus refused to return the gunpowder to Dimah, Aji’s widow?
I’m not sure if Rentap is aware of the negotiation as the Rajah negotiators only approach OKP Nanang’s for the truce. If Rentap was a true leader, he should have ordered a single fort to be built for all. Instead, he asked OKP Nanang’s fort to be built separately from his fort which would be the first to be attacked by advancing Brooke forces. Rentap’s deceitful action betrayed himself. When OKP Nanang left the fort after agreeing to a truce by Rajah’s men, they brought all their gun powder and other small firearms with them, except for Bujang Timpang Berang and some cannon balls, which was too heavy to be hauled back.
Did Rentap really refuse to surrender to Brooke or did Brooke really refuse to offer Rentap to surrender?
Rentap was a fugitive to the Brooke Government for Killing Allan Lee, Stewart and Patinggi Ali. There is no pardon from the Rajah. The question of refusal to surrender or offering of amnesty was irrelevant and non existence.
Aji appears to have brought Bjg Timpang Berang to Rentap’s stockade on Mount Sadok. This suggests that Aji and his brothers really already decided to join Rentap to fight Brooke. They were also seen to openly support the defence of Mukah and Shariff Masahor during earlier attack by Brooke there.
Aji brought the Bujang Timpang Berang cannon to their own fort, not to Rentap’s stockade. Shariff Masahor was their suppliers of gunpowder ans small firearms and were thus allied to each other.
After Aji’s death at Sg Langit, his widow Dimah might just leave the gunpowder with Bjg Timpang Berang and Rentap, perhaps hoping for Rentap to avenge Aji’s death or just leave it as it is.

They were not stupid to leave the weapons to the people who could turn against them. Ofcourse Dimah returned to her own home she built wit Aji. She had two adult sons and a daughter to support her, including their enormous material wealth.

The amount of gunpowder was not an issue. Giving it into your desperate enemy is more dangerous and not worth the amount of gunpowder.

It is understandable that if Nanang and Luyoh chose to build their own stockade below Rentap’s stockade because they chose to live on separate longhouses. But why couldn’t they join forces at Rentap’s stockade which was at the highest peak of Mount Sadok? Because their stockade was at the lower point, it was the first to be attacked by Brooke if they didn’t surrender.
Did they prefer to surrender in view of their women and children and their reluctance to leave/lose their land of Layar, perhaps forever if they repeatedly run away from Brooke? So one way was to submit and accept Brooke. A modern day’s saying is “if one cannot fight them, then join them!”.

With an Embaloh mother (there is no mention of his father’s origins, though a mix of Embaloh and Malay is likely), Abu Bakar was in a good position of local influence and had been responsible for arranging a peace-making ceremony between the Katibas Iban and people of the Embaloh and Bunut rivers. Prior to his hasty departure for Sarawak, some 200 Katibas Iban had come to the Embaloh, ostensibly in expectation of the peacemaking, living off their Embaloh hosts and rice that Abu Bakar provided them. Although Abu Bakar had guaranteed that the Iban would behave themselves, people in Bunut and along the Palin River worried that they were making the area insecure. Abu Bakar’s connection to the Katibas was not coincidental, either: He and Sanang knew each other well as their fathers, Pangeran Suma and Unggat, had been friends for years. (The Dutch claimed that as principal headman of the Katibas, Unggat received an income of 50 or 75 dollars from the Sarawak government derived from tax revenue, an office to which Sanang may have hoped to succeed.)
During his investigation in mid-January, Controleur J.C.E. Tromp became certain that Abu Bakar had planned an attack with the Katibas Iban during the time of the peacemaking, most likely against Bunut and five Embaloh settlements, using the stolen money and goods to finance the assault. It is not clear from the reports, however, whether he planned a treacherous attack at the ceremony itself (which seems unlikely given the guaranteed presence of Dutch forces) or an ambush as participants journeyed upriver. Bunut certainly was his main target, and he gave people in four of the most-upriver Embaloh communities–Keram, Bukung, Belimbis, and Pinjawan–the choice of following him or having their houses burned. Abu Bakar apparently held influence in those communities, especially Belimbis and Pinjawan where his mother and other close kin lived. (5)
Not only was the attack and robbery near Nanga Mandai led by Sanang, but several Embaloh were involved as well; namely, Makati (headman of Bukung), Kesui and Langi of Belimbis, Jenal of Pinjawan, and men from one of the three or four houses of Teliai where Suka was headman. The raiders carried the stolen goods to Bukung and Belimbis before moving on to Sarawak. Following Abu Bakar, people from those four communities also transported their household wares to Sarawak while hiding other valuables in the forest. It is unlikely that this migration was willing: A Palin headman, Benuang, left for Sarawak at the same time with some 60 households, after giving Sanang a number of ceramic jars and other valuables, and Abu Bakar supposedly threatened others who did not want to move with beheading by the Iban and having their headless corpses thrown into the river to give notice to the Malays of Bunut and the controleur. In addition, Sanang and his men had extorted chickens, taro, and other food from the inhabitants of Ulak Pauh, Paat, and Nanga Sungai when they had passed that way.
Although they were convinced that the Embaloh themselves would not join Abu Bakar’s attack, as a precaution the Dutch stationed an armed boat at Nanga Embaloh, and the Mangku Bumi of Bunut led a large force to strengthen the fortification there. Interestingly, the Mangku Bumi had considerable influence in the five most-downriver Embaloh settlements–Ulak Pauh, Paat, Nanga Sungai, Teliai, and Benua Ujung–where many of his mother’s kin lived. (6) People in the remaining Embaloh settlements also prepared for the threatened attack from Sarawak. The attack, of course, never came. Notified by the Dutch of Abu Bakar’s and Sanang’s activities, the Sarawak government arrested them in March or April, and the two men quietly faded from the documents. How long they stayed in jail and how much of the stolen goods were recovered may be hidden in the Sarawak archives. Presumably, the Embaloh who were conscripted by Abu Bakar returned home and resumed their old lives. The Dutch certainly do not say any more on the subject in the documents i have reviewed. (7) However, in a postscript to his report, Resident Kater mentions that the Assistant Resident received a letter from Abu Bakar (presumably before he fled to Sarawak?) saying that the Malay rulers along the Kapuas were in league against him. This provides the only hint of motivation, suggesting that, instead of a rebellion against the Dutch per se, it was local-level political disputes that motivated Abu Bakar’s efforts. What exactly he hoped to accomplish is unclear and is likely to remain so until someone stumbles across additional references in the archives, perhaps in documents specifically dealing with Bunut, or records or oral histories of the incident.

In early January 1879, Iban raiders from the Katibas attacked a large boat near Nanga Mandai; the five-man crew, along with the traders Sukin (Chinese) and Abang Salim (Malay), fled into the forest and were not pursued. Much of their cargo, including rice, was lost overboard, but about 700 dollars worth of getah (forest latex) was stolen. Dutch officials determined that the raiders were led by Sanang (a.k.a. Keling), son of the headman Unggat, who was in league with Abu Bakar. At about the same time, Abu Bakar had swindled an Arab trader named Sheik Imal at Nanga Embaloh–selling him 10,000 gantangs of rice for 400 dollars but only delivering 2,000 gantangs. A few days after the Iban raid, Abu Bakar left for Sarawak (with five small cannons he took from the government outpost at Nanga Embaloh), claiming his mother was ill upriver.

His successor, Pangeran Hadji Mohammad Abas (von Gaffron’s number 13), reigned for 48 years from 1830 and was much loved by Dutch officials from the frequent praise I have read in the archival documents. The Emperan Iban-Selimbau connection to the term abang is further established through an old wooden measuring bowl (kulak), an heirloom of a household in a community of Kecamatan Batang Lupar (Figure 2). (4) The bowl, measuring 15 cm. in height and 20 cm. in diameter, is said to have been given to a household ancestor by the raja of Selimbau. According to the household’s oral history, the jawi script is said to read, “Ini gantang Apang Jail tulih abang amat raja Selimbau (this is the measuring bowl of Apang Jali written by [his] true abang, the ruler of Selimbau).” Apang they took to mean a Malayized version of the Iban apai or ‘father,’ which would indicate the recipient as Jinak, widely referred to as Apai Jali after his eldest son. Jim Collins (personal communication) indicates that apang is an old Kapuas teknonym equivalent to the Iban apai. (5) Here, it is the ruler of Selimbau who is portrayed as the relative superior through reference to his royal abang status, though Jinak was a well-known leader and manok sabong (literally, ‘fighting cock’ or war lieutenant) under the sponsorship of such tau’ serang as Ngumbang and Temenggong Rentap (the second one of that name). Another interpretation of abang is the more prosaic meaning of elder brother or elder brother-in-law, which might reflect an attempt by Selimbau to mitigate future hostile relations with their long-time neighbors, sometime enemies and allies, and new economic competitors by emphasizing a fictive kinship relation or perhaps even referencing the Minsut story.

To decipher the jawi script, I sent both a photo of the bowl and a rubbing I made of the script (Figure 3) to Michael Laffan (Princeton University) and Annabel Gallop (The British Library) to see what sense they could make of it. Though hard to read because of worm holes and stylistic flourishes, they were able to discern the following clearly enough:

According to Gallop (personal communication), this follows the style of metal household containers seen in Brunei of the same period, and the “mem …” might refer to mempunyai or memerintah, indicating territorial jurisdiction. The date of 1888 solidifies this possibility: In the middle of that year, the Dutch held a formal peacemaking ceremony between Selimbau and Emperan Iban who had settled along the lower Leboyan River (see Wadley 2003:101). Because of ongoing disputes over access to commercial forest products involving both sides encroaching on the claims of the other, the Dutch brokered a settlement in which the boundary between them was set as the left bank of the Leboyan (looking downriver). At the time, Jinak’s people had begun moving into the lower Leboyan from the Lanjak area following the devastation of the Kedang Expedition of 1886 (Wadley 2001, 2004). Following this peacemaking, more Iban moved into the lower Leboyan and more Malays moved more permanently into the Lakes, creating conflict as well as opportunities for intermarriage (Wadley 2003). Unfortunately, no abang is detectable in the script to confirm that part of the oral history.

Ari nya tadi, kitai tau berubah nyadi bansa ti kering lalu ulih berambau ka pemansang bansa kitai ngagai anembiak rebak baru. Bansa orang endang deka meda bansa kitai lemi lalu nyabong kitai belaya. Nya alai, tabah ka ati diri lalu anang malut diri enggau laya bansa orang bukai. Minta kitai sama-sama ngayuh ka perau kitai empu aja ….. anang kiroh ka perau bansa orang bukai. ntah di sabah atau yang namanya kapit atau nanga gat anaknya bunsu gerinang dimana pun yang namanya sama dengan saya,saya berdua saudara yang di kalimantan timur,saya bernama keling dan adeq saya bernama ding…saya lahir tgl 01 bulan oct 1974 di kampong mamahak besar saya berumur 2 tahun bapak saya yg bernama bunsu gerinang pulang ke malaysia adeq saya baru berumur 6 bln dalam kandungan ibu saya…sampai saat itu dan sekarang tidak pernah tahu apa kah masih hidup atau mati kah bapak kami ??? bnyk sekali cerita tentang bapak kami yaitu bunsu gerinang tapi tdk pernah ada sedikit pun kami di sebutkan..memang apakah kami tidak di akui itu adalah hak penulis…nama ibu saya Marsiana Win Geh…mohon maaf bukan maksud mau mengatakan bahwa saya ingin mencari perhatian atau mencari apapun tapi ini adalah curahan hati seorang anak untuk melihat bapaknya…………salam untuk yang punya web ini terima kasih………………………………
saya anak dari bunsu gerinang yang berada di kalimantan timur Indonesia hp.081350131133,saya tidak bangga dengan apa yang di tulis dalam situs2 di internet tentang bunsu gerinang.saya kecewa dgn apa yang anda tulis…….saya keling bunsu gerinang tapi tdk pernah mengakui bahwa saya benar2 anak bunsu gerinang kerna saya hanya terlahir dan di tinggal….siapapun anda yang menulis kan segala cerita di situs bunsu gerinang bagi saya gak masalah…semoga anda selalu di berkahi dan di berkati oleh tuhan anda……..

aku amat gaga meda website nuan tok, ngelama tok aku nang lama begiga ka pasal kitai iban.
